Brunswick’s Best Business Practices
by Don McCauley

Intrigued by the friendliness of businesses and services in Brunswick County Don McCauley, a  local marketing and publicity consultant determined to see if he could put his finger on the subtle difference that makes this area such a pleasant place to do business. He continues to canvass local business owners with his favorite question -- What is your number one priority focus in all your business dealings?

Fancy Flea
Ella Oliveira - Fancy Flea Antique Mall and Flea Market

“Selection and one of a kind items” was the answer I received from Ella Oliveira, owner of the Fancy Flea Antique Mall and Flea Market, located on Route 17 in the former Wicker Imports location. This place is absolutely huge and features items I’ve not seen anywhere else. Traveling as I do from place to place, I've seen a lot, but was quite taken aback by some of the very special items I found here. One of the most special is Ella herself. She is not just committed, she is just plain ADDICTED and it shows.

Her eyes light up every time she gets the opportunity to discuss the Fancy Flea. She likes to say that her new store (open since October 26) is “a great place to spend an afternoon.” I believe one could spend several afternoons here and still not see it all.

LANDA Auto
Louis and Angie Lewis - L and A Auto

“Customer service,” was the reply from Louie and Angie Lewis, the owners of L&A Auto, located on Rt 17 in Supply. “We know every one of our customers and have known most of them for many, many years. I believe our customers stay with us because they know we understand their needs. We end up building a relationship that goes beyond just working on their vehicles.”

I can personally vouch for that, being one of their customers myself. The professionalism and quality of service found at L&A Auto is top notch. It is my personal opinion that larger chain auto services simply cannot match the service you will recieve from a company that really wants to keep your buisness once they have it! L&A Auto is such a company. And it shows through in everything they do.

Kirby Law
Amanda Kirby - Kirby Law Firm

“We have our client's needs at heart. And we are willing to go that extra mile.” That is a very strong statement. However, when Amanda Kirby makes such a statement, you believe what she says. Amanda recently opened the doors at her new office in the Visionmasters building in Shallotte after spending a number of years practicing in Wilmington. Her primary areas of practice are real estate closings, refinances, deed preparation, will preparation, powers of attorney, living wills and the formation of LLCs.
A trusted resource for the services Amanda provides here in Brunswick County is a welcome addition to our area indeed. Not only is she at the top of her very complex game, she has the communication skills requireed to make even the most confusing issues seem easy to understand, a very valuable trait in her chosen profession.

Marys Restaurant
Don and Bea Walters - Mary B’s

“Quality and great service” was the very quick answer I received from Don and Bea Walters. Don and Bea have hit a home run with Mary B’s in Ocean Isle Beach. This restaurant is one of those places that stands on pretention not at all. Don spent 28 years in the furniture business in Hickory and Bea spent many years working at a local resort. Upon Don’s retirement they opened the restaurant, specializing in great home cooked dishes at an extremely fair price. In addition to their own high quality versions of standard local fare, the restaurant also offers a great line of specialty sandwiches and much more, most notable homemade desserts and a new line of ice cream products. During the interview, as I asked questions, several times Bea asked her customers to answer for her. This takes a great deal of confidence in one's reputation! The reviews from her own customers were glowing. They have built that reputation in a very short time. They have it and they certainly deserve it!

Printing Shop
The Printing Shoppe Inc. - Regina Nichols & Deborah Blythe

“Providing very low cost mailing and printing.”

Now, I have been doing direct mail for years. It is very effective, but what a headache. The Printing Shoppe makes it very simple and easy. The Printing Shoppe works with your list, helps you create one or finds one for purchase. Using their special software allows them to make the claim that “direct mail postage + our mail service cost = less than first class postage!” They also offer mail merges and customized mailings, in additon to printing both in house and outsourcing. Newsletters are a speciality, as are postcard printing, design and mailing. They also provide short run, full color digital printing.

Zeetlegoos
Paul and Rae Keane - Zeetlegoo's Pet & People Store

When asked about their primary focus in their business, it unquestionably is a total focus on the well-being of pets. “Our cat Zeetlegoo was allergic to corn and it was she who started us on our mission to bring healthy foods and fun treats to other animals. We carry premium foods and healthy treats with no food coloring or artificial preservatives. We're kind of taking the holistic approach.”

Ever wonder what is actually in your pet’s food?  You can find out at Zeetlegoo’s. Many of their store items are Sammy (their cat) and Timber (their dog) tested and they both have a long way to go since there are over 3700 items!  They use the same philosophy with their small animal and bird food as well - no preservatives, artificial colors or fillers.  Check out their store at 1635 No. Howe St. in Southport.  You will be glad you did.  Tell Sammy I said "hi".
